  Claude and Francois-Xavier Lalanne

One of the most exciting things for me is when I discover interesting people. I love to really dive in and figure out all about them - what really makes them tick. A few years ago, I learned about the art couple, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne at an exhibit at Le Musée des Décoratifs in Paris. I had never known of them and was completely struck by their work. Before François-Xavier Lalanne died in 2008, he created huge animal bronzes that are quirky and funky. You might have seen his sheep along Park Avenue many years ago. His wife, Claude creates nature inspired jewelry and furniture as well as monumental sculpture that is also quite quirky and funky. They really pushed the boundaries of sculpture, often with refreshing humor. They were so passionate about their work and it seemed as though their personal lives and their creative lives were one and the same. I really appreciate how creative they were and how much they enjoyed their life together. I obsess over my books about them and have them laying around in the studio for quick inspiration. I recently had a friend visit the studio and she nonchalantly told me that many years ago she took a bath in the blue hippopotamus bathtub. I made her sign the book!

Here are a few of my favorite books on this amazing couple and their work.
